Match Report

On a weekend of extremely poor availability throughout the club Ashley welcomed promotion chasing Congleton down to Ashley for the first time. Despite being presented with a good deck the opposition won the chose to bowl first which when recalling the first game earlier in the season was perhaps a fair reflection of their stronger discipline.  Dave Baythorpe and Craig Knight made a solid start with Baythorpe hitting well over the infield until he was adjudged to have offered a return catch to Beaumont which looked suspiciously like a bump ball. Knight added another 20 with Richard Smith until he fell LBW to Beaumont  for 21 with the score on 47-2 after 16 overs. Skipper Ian Barber looked well set but was deceived by Potts and was well taken at slip for 17. Each time Ashley seemed to have got the foundations of a partnership the visitors managed to breakthrough despite not necessarily applying any great pressure. Seamus Sons appeared to be in good touch until he was surprisingly bowled round his legs to a nondescript ball from Browe and Ashley were set back again at 91-5. Ross McKinstry struggled to make an impact and Alistair Horn smashed a couple of good boundaries before being struck infront for 8. Harry Horsfall was caught on the boundary edge off a rare aggressive shot and Tyms and Woods fell without scoring. Dave Alves lifted a big six into the top field in his 11 not out as Richard continued to purr along to an unbeaten 52 which would have been a lot more if it were not for an excellent fielding performance from the young Congleton side. Ashley closed on an under-par 155-9.

The Congleton reply saw several lofted slip drives off Woods evading the close catchers but it was the old warhorse Gary Tyms who got the breakthrough nipping one back off the seam to clean up Browe at 24-1. In between some early playing and missing Dale punctuated the infield with several classy drives on his way to a fine unbeaten 81 that effectively won the game for the visitors. Tom Blease looked nothing like the player that notched an impressive ton in the first game though did manage an effective 41 in a partnership of 92 with Dale that took the game away from Ashley after surviving a tough chance that he slapped straight at gully with the full face of the bat. Woods returned to the Church End to claim some reward for a luckless first spell when he saw Sons take a fine catch to dismiss Blease at mid-off. Tyms then sent Congleton’s overseas star Jai Bailey back to the shed for a golden duck. Steve Brew dropped anchor and batted like Chris Tavare in support of his well set partner Dale to see the visitors home for a deserved 20 point win in the 43rd over.

In what was a good game of cricket that was a little closer than the scores would suggest, Ashley’s middle and lower order  failed to put up any real resistance and consequently the Railway side were at least 30 runs short of a demanding total against a strong batting side such as Congleton. If the chance offered earlier in the game had been taken then it may have been a different outcome but it was a deserved victory by Congleton who had got their tactics correct as one suspects that even Ashley would not have been bowled out chasing on that deck. Next week Ashley travel up the Tatton Mile to take on local rivals Mere who beat Davenham this week and now lie 5th one place ahead of Ashley whose availability woes are expected to continue for another week.
