Brooklands and Ashley both put out strong sides to fight it out in the quarter final of the Twenty / 20 Cup and much as it was in the league game, it was the hired gun that made the difference, though to be fair he was partnered by a guy who should also be looking for an envelope. John Birchall (58) and Christian Hart (49) batted superbly to put on 110 for the first wicket inside 14 overs on a good Brooklands pitch to set up the win. Though Ashley bowled pretty well the two batters remained very much in control with plenty of controlled boundaries and well judge singles. Word was the paid overseas Vishal Sharma arrived in a fast car from Birmingham to be in the side tonight but he seemed to have left his shots back in the Black Country as he fell slogging to what has become know as the “Sharma” legside field. AJ Hart and M. Singh ran hard in the final overs to remain unbeaten on 15 and 17 respectively and set Ashley a daunting 156 to win.

 

Ashley reply started well with Knight and Smith scoring freely but were soon undone by the young slow bowling excellence of Roberts and Woodage who returned 3-8 and 1-25 respectively to tie up the visitors innings and remove key batsmen. Only Knight and the excellent Richards batted with any real authority to match the Brooklands opening pair and the boundary count weighed heavily in the home sides favour.  Despite a spirited effort Ashley fell some 21 runs short with the outstanding Brooklands fielding also making life extremely difficult as they eased to a deserved victory.

 

Good luck to Brooklands in their pursuit of a League and Cup double and the riches and respect that such an achievement would bring.
