Match Report
The winners of this fixture would go through to the 2nd Round of the Jack Gardner Trophy after the first two games of the round robin had been washed out. As soon as the signs for Bollington were sited it began to rain; typical. Eventually the rain stopped and the two skippers went out to toss up a call of heads from Burgess saw him win his first toss as Ashley 3rd Team Skipper and decided to bowl in an attempt to keep his 100% unbeaten record [Played 2 / Rained off 2]. McKie and Cusack opened up the bowling with a combination of youth and a bad shoulder. Bollingtons start was steady with both bowlers beating the bat but with no real chances given. Rowe and Whitehead decided to put foot to metal and with only 1 chance given a put down off the bowling of Eadie they were soon approaching 100 without loss. The introduction of Tommy Smith and Josh Wardle slowed the rate slightly as they both bowled with good control. Wardle manged to get some bounce of a damp wicket and shrugged off his old image of Mallinga and has grown up literally into a younger Stuart Broad at 6’5” but still is only the second tallest at Ashley; a good 4 inches behind Brownhill. P Burgess eventually made the break through after an opening partnership of over 150 having put down Whitehead off his own bowling in the previous over, a good catch by McKie on the boundary off a half tracker. Kev O’Connor came on to bowl for his first time in a few years and after a rather loose first over clicked back into gear and nearly took off the head of Horsefield. Cusack and McKie were brought back at the death; bowled well and took a wicket a piece which they both deserved. Even though Bollington had amassed a big score of 247-3 including a solid knock of 111 by Colin Rowe [Skipper] the heads of the Ashley XI did not drop and there was some good fielding in the slippery conditions. After tea Burgess [M] and Brownhill went out to bat and soon a breakthrough happened with Burgess edging to the slips and Ashley were 8 for 1. Ferris came into bat in positive style hitting a four and a six into the river [Not directly as he may have you believe but a big bounce off the path into the river]. Brownhill then followed Burgess after a promising start edging a wide one to the slips. Ferris was then run out and a ball later Wardle M was brilliantly caught at mid-on and Ashley were a sorry 43 for 4. After some good spin bowling from Plant [Egg to his mates] and swing bowling from Paterson K Ashley were soon dismissed for a rather sorry 79 and were out of the Cup. We wish Bollington luck in the next round.
Its now time to concentrate on the league !
