Ashley 3rd XI vs Tattenhall

Date:  6th July 2008

Venue: Tattenhall

Toss won by:Tattenhall

Batted First:Ashley

An eventful trip down to Tattenhall started as the skipper set his satnav forgetting that 2 years previous the satnav was utterly confused as how to get to Tattenhall and sent them on a merry trip round the delights of Cheshire passing four different signs for Candle works shops.  After a journey of over 1 hr Skip turned up with Burt, Cusack and Shelston and the toss could be made.

Tattenhall was surrounded by threatening cloud and the rain started however by 2pm had stopped and the Tattenhall skipper put Ashley into bat.

Brownhill edged one to gully in the second over and Ashley were not off to a good start and in the 3rd  over Smith was caught behind off his first ball and Ashley were 3 for 2.  Burgess M and Shelston batted well in difficult conditions got Ashley past 50 until Shelston was unluckily adjudged LBW to a ball that hit the top of his pads which brought Burt to the crease who was looking to build on the big hitting 71 he had made at Middlewich a couple of weeks before.  Burgess M was still there on 25 until Tattenhalls skipper had him trapped LBW, it was a good battling innings from a batsman who had been struggling for runs and one for him to build on. Burt was joined by Matt Wardle and only a few runs were added before Atkinson took an outstanding one handed catch at first slip of Sandland and Burt was gone for a quick hitting 17. Atkinson had not got down so quickly since and episode out side a pub somewhere in Cheshire…Ian Horn came out and was back 2 balls later after being clean bowled by Sandland. Ferris in his new batting position of 8 [ Suprisingly he had not complained at being dropped to 8 for at least 30 seconds during the day ] came out with a point to prove and hit a quickfire 24 unfortunately the wickets tumbled and Ashley ended up a sorry 122 all out.

After a very good tea the tennis section of Tattenhall Sports club devoured the rest of Cricketers tea even though the cricketers themselves were given stern looks even if they even so look at the tea the tennis section had. Federer was also looking to fight back against Nadal as Ashley stepped out to do something similar against Tattenhall.

Cusack had O’Neil trapped in his first over and Ashley had the start that was required.  Spann and Huxley obviously had an early dart in mind and flashed hard at everything.  Spann should have gone in Cusack’s third over as he skied a chance to Burgess P who got underneath it and dropped it. Huxley and Spann continued the onslaught with un-othodox shots all over the park.  Huxley was then dropped by Smith off the bowling of P Burgess however listened to the call of ‘Keepers end !’ and threw right over the stumps and Huxley was run out for 27. Spann soon joined Huxley as he tried to hit over mid on off Smith and P Burgess did not drop him a second time.  There was now a glimmer of hope as Tattenhall were 70 for 3 the same position Ashley had been in earlier. Wilcox and Worley hit the ball in the air and opportunities were given but it was not to be Ashley’s day.  Matt Wardle was given his first bowl of the season and looks to be a promising off spinner and had Wilcox beaten all ends up as he danced down the wicket and was bowled middle stump. Birch and Worley batted sensibly and hit the winning runs off Shelston who having taken a wicket during the week in a friendly was given his first bowl in competitive cricket for 20 years.

A poor batting performance by most of the Ashley team and an average bowling display saw the second defeat in two games. Hopefully a more battling display would be put on against Alsager 3rds the following week in order to get Ashley 3rds back on track.

Good luck to Tattenhall for the rest of the season; a fixture that is always played in good spirits whatever the situation however it was a long drive back for Ashley but not quite as long as it was on the way there for some.
