Ashley 3rd XI vs Stretton 3rd XI

Date:  8th June  2008

Venue: Stretton

Toss won by: Ashley

Batted First: Ashley

A short trip down the M56 to Stretton 8 of the Ashley 3rd team managed to make it in time, 3 were making their way after Smith and Wardle M were still basking in the glory of their maiden 100’s for Ashley U-15 Wardle J was hoping he could keep his younger brother quite with a performance of his own today.

On a nice hot day the skipper was hoping to win the toss which he did and elected to bat as he had the strongest batting line up that the 3rds had seen for many a year.

There was a slight re-shuffle of the top order as Smith still dreaming of his England debut was yet to arrive and Mike Burgess stepped up to the plinth to open with Brownhill who was yet to make many runs this season. Burgess started off nicely with a cut for 4 off Langfords first over.  However,  Stretton Skipper Weisonborn had him trapped LBW in his second over and Ashley were 7 for 1.  The junior members in the meantime had arrived.  Out stepped Ferris hoping to score some runs for the first time in the league but was sent back by I Horn whose finger rose again as Langford had him trapped LBW for 1, anyone would have thought the ex chairman wanted to bat.... At 8 for 2 off 7 overs it was not looking too great.

Out stepped Tommy Smith in very confident mood and made a quick 10 before nicking a top ball behind off Hindle, his 100 for the 3rds would have to wait another day. The commentators jinx had worked again as Wardle J had made a compliment about the partnership Tommy and his brother had made that morning just as Hindle was running in; 39 for 3.  Brownhill had started to play some shots after a slow start and Ashley were now looking more comfortable at 57 for 3. Jinx two of the day came from I Horn; ‘We are looking a lot better now its looking good !’ J Burt got the perfect inswinger from Talbot which thudded into his stumps. 57-4.  The other 100 man Wardle M stepped out to add to his tally for the day only to play a horrible crossed batted shot to another inswinger from Talbot a shot he will no doubt be removing from his locker and throwing in the bin; 57-5…double jinx I Horn had to make it up somehow.

Having already been running late when the skipper picked him up in the afternoon [In between trimming his hedge and having the length of his new whites adjusted] the ex-chairman stepped out to bat in 25 degree heat in a jumper.  Horn was ready for the off right from the start and the revival was on as a vast array of cuts, slogs to all parts of different cow corners showed that Horns eye was most certainly in.  Brownhill was also growing in confidence and smashing the Stretton attack about. At the second drinks break [30 overs] Ashley were looking better at 111-5 but no one dared utter a word as the skipper had banned all positive comments. At 126-5 Brownhill went to hit Langford back over his head and was caught in the deep by Talbot; a cracking knock of 57 which was enjoyed by all and ended their partnership of 69. Horn however was not done; now partnered by Carey making his 3rd team debut they put on 66 in the last 11 overs with Horn bringing his 50 up with a more orthodox square cut for 4.  A superb recovery as Ashley ended up on 192-6 the Stretton youngsters were not happy and their heads were down after dropping 4 catches.  Advantage Ashley.

Wardle J and Burt opened the bowling and in the last ball of his first over Wardle uprooted Tidds middle stump with a quick inswinging Yorker. Anyone who has faced him in the nets knows how good a yorker he can bowl. With the last ball of his second over Wardle bowled an identical ball with the same result Hindle looked startled 8 for 1 became 8 for 2.  Having seen his fellow countrymen easily beaten by England in the morning and not troubled the scorer himself Kiwi Burt was getting his steam up and dismissed Talbot by removing his middle stump, there was a look of distain on Talbot as he trudged off. At 12 for 3 it was certainly advantage Ashley and everyone’s tails were up.

Enter Kev Tierney and yes his slower bowl which nearly caught Ashleys skipper out. As the ball came out of the back of Tierney’s hand Burgess P could not believe what he had just seen but wait a split second it was coming straight at him. On the second attempt Burgess took the catch at mid on another wicket for Tierney with his slower ball. ‘At last a wicket’ uttered Tierney ‘3 would be nice Kev’ came the reply from the still stunned captain. Tierney then had Flanagan who looks a promising left hand bat for Stretton trapped LBW for 19.

Burgess P then brought himself on and was cross batted to the boundary first ball and was suitably unimpressed by the batman’s technique. Taylor tried to slog again and smashed it back at Burgess who was not in the mood for dropping off his own bowling and Taylor was on his way for a quickfire 21.  The wickets kept on coming with Tierney removing Garrod with a grubber ball and Burgess bowling Wells round his legs.  Potts and Langford looked as though they might hold on for the draw.  Time to bring back the Ginger Prince thought the skipper and J Wardle did not disappoint him.  This time the away swinger was in order bowling Langford for 14 in his first return over then dismissing the skipper Weissenborn with the same delivery in his third over Stretton 115 all out.

Recovering from 57-5 to 192-6 was an excellent effort from Brownhill and I Horn. The skipper could not have asked for a better opening spell from J Wardle and Burt which immediately put Stretton on the back foot and superb bowling again from J Wardle at the death.  A very good all round performance from everyone in the field and another win in the bag.  Ashley will certainly be looking to build on that against Alsager 4th at home next Sunday.
