Match Report

On an early season scorcher Ashley welcomed Cholmondley to the Railway Field and having won the toss Ashley captain Ian Barber backed his mis-firing batting line up to put up a score on what proved to be an excellent track. With the new ball nipping around and offering considerable swing in the humid conditions the skipper and Craig Knight batted cautiously to post 78 for the first wicket in 25 overs. After resolutely anchoring the innings for an hour Barber went on the offensive and picked up a couple of nice boundaries before being caught at the wicket off the youthful leg spin of Young. Knight continued to bat well despite surviving a simple chance to 2nd slip off Cooke when on 21, and went on to punish the visitors. At 87 and with a maiden Ashley century in sight he was bowled by Young though probably “Out; Tired” was more appropriate after a strength sapping 2 hour knock. Liam O’Doherty followed up last weeks much-improved showing with a good knock of 58 with shots all round the wicket, working the ball around skillfully. Deans came and went after missing a well-flighted straight one from Young that saw the batsman reflecting head in hands for some while afterward. Nomaan Hasan once again showed his allround abilities with a big hitting 31 not out in a partnership with Liam that saw the pair adding a vital 65 in the last six overs to close on 208-5.

The visitors reply started in a run frenzy with Middleton smashing 19 off Nomaan Hasan’s first over, but the bowler had his revenge in his next over with O’Doherty completing a simple catch running in from point. Nomaan struck again in his next over when he found some late swing to clean up Evans and reduce the visitors to 22-2 after only 5 overs. The skipper moved decisively to remove Hasan from the attack earlier than usual and he himself gave an excellent display of seam bowling, well backed up by a tidy display by keeper Matt Wilson. His return of 13-3-14 was very impressive, and contained the big wicket of Hockenhull who was well set on 34 when he was struck in front. Cholmondley were 99-5 after 31 overs and though Ashley still had thoughts of victory the draw was looking favourite. Dave Alves 2nd spell from the bottom end saw the big breakthrough with the skipper taking a fine diving catch at mid-on to dismiss Johnson for 42. With Deans now operating from the Church End the slow bowlers teamed up to finish off the job; Dixie picked up Atkinson cheaply and Almo cleaned up Egan and Barker to bank the 25 point win and post figures of 3-14. Jones did not bat after suffering a finger injury in the first innings.

This was another fine home victory achieved on the back of good performances with both bat and ball. This was the first time the batting had really fired this season and it was good to see some fine knocks at the top of the order from Craig Knight, Ian Barber, Liam O’Doherty and Nomaan Hasan. With the ball the skipper finally remember that he used to be able to bowl and produced a superb spell to wrestle back the impetus in the game, and then Almo ripped thru the tail to secure the win. The game was also notable for the 1X1 debut of Harrry Horsfall who impressed with his attitude and ability in the field. Next week Ashley welcome a few players back perhaps and travel to former Cheshire County League outfit Congleton who are a strong batting proposition indeed.
