Ashley 3rd XI vs Alsager 3rd XI

Date:  13th July 2008

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by:Alsager

Batted First:Alsager

Due to the away fixture being switched to Ashley earlier in the year the Ashley 3rds travelled down to Alsager only to be greeted by some of Alsager 3rd team making their way upto Ashley.  Confused and feeling rather peeved the Ashley skipper gathered his team and headed back to HQ. A self imposed fine of a jug of beer at the end of season do seemed fitting however he will remain convinced till the day he dies that the fixture should have been at Alsager, however home advantage was Ashley’s.  Thanks to Ali and Lucy Horn teas could be provided.

Alsager won the toss and elected to bat in the baking hot sun.  Hopefully Ashley were not going to be chasing the ball around for the next 45 overs as happened in the previous fixture.  In the second over Cusack dropped A Newbould off Burt in the slips however in Burts 3rd over he bowled Newbould for 11 and Ashley were off to a good start.  Unfortunately Greenhalgh and Farrington soon got to grips with the Ashley attack until Farrington pulled a muscle in his back which saw him leave the field which brought in Felton.

The slow bowlers were eventually brought on as a ploy to restrict the run rate and frustrate the batsmen.  Burgess soon removed Greenhalgh with a quicker ball that was superbly snaffled by Ferris behind the stumps.  In his next over Burgess bowled Felton with a much slower ball and Felton was through with his shot before the ball hit the deck.  Gregory who scored 112* last time at Ashley was Burgess’s next victim as he was bowled off his pads and the left handed Hindle followed after some messing around with the sight screens.  Alsagers run flow had been stemmed and they had lost 6 wkts to boot and Ashley were looking in a strong position.  Burgess then got his first Michelle of the season when Maddox top edged trying to sweep and Ferris took and easy catch behind the stumps once he’d realized the ball was in the air.  Tierney had been bowling well at the Church End adding to Alsagers frustration and he bowled T Newbould whose Boycott like innings had been enthralling the crowd for too many overs and certainly did not impress the rather outspoken Kiwi Burt ‘God I’m getting bored out here’ came the cry from mid-off.

Tierney then had the hard hitting cow corner specialist Betley caught brilliantly by Matt Wardle over in cow corner.  This brought the hobbling Farrington out to bat and he managed to hit a few more blows to the boundary before Tierney bowled him middle peg.  Alsager had batted past their allotted 45 overs fearing that 160 was only just about par.

After tea Brownhill and Smith went out in positive mood Ashley were in their best position to win against Alsager 3rds for a couple of years.  Unfortunatley as quick as Brownhill and Smith went out they were both back in by the end of the first over and Ashley had got off to another bad start as they were 1 for 2 after the first over.  The older statesmen Ferris [Back in his peferred No.3 slot] and Shelston batted sensibly and got Ashley to 32 before Shelston became A Newboulds 3rd victim. Ferris swiftly followed as he was caught at short mid wicket for 14.  42 for 4 became 47 for 5 as Newbould picked up his 5th victim bowling Matt Wardle for 1. Burt was joined by Horn and some controlled hitting saw Ashley add another 20 before Burt hit Newbould T to mid off and at 67 for 6 Ashley were looking a clear second favourite.  Horn and Burgess fell victim to Newbould T and in the 36th over Ashley were 84 for 9 and needed to bat out another 8 overs to avoid defeat..  Agrawal and Tierney showed rearguard at its finest with all but 2 of Alsagers fielders crowding the bat.  Sadly with only 13 balls left to survive Agrawal pushed too hard to get the run to leave Tierney 1 ball to face in the over and chipped it to mid on.

A very good bowling and fielding display was ruined by a lack luster batting display which threw away Ashleys best chance of beating top of the table Alsager 3rds.

Hopefully Ashley would fair better at Winnington Park.  This time the skipper double checked they were away from home and that his satnav would know how to get him and his players to Winnington Park.
