Another bright and sunny day down at Ashley HQ saw the visit of Alsager 4ths and hopefully the opportunity on building on the victory at Stretton last week and keeping the unbeaten run going. Another toss was lost by the Ashley skip and the usual ‘Oh you’re such as useless tosser of the coin skip’ comments were made; hopefully all in jest.... Sticking with the opening pair of Josh Wardle and John Burt it was in Wardle’s second over that he struck with Miller hitting one to Eaton at point who got two hands to a firmly stuck shot and Ashley were off to another good start. This brought in Walker who struggled somewhat with Wardle’s pace and accuracy and the next ball after a strong appeal for LBW was turned down Walker was found plumb in front with even the keeper Simon ‘I don’t go up for anything unless its hitting middle’ Ferris jumping up and he was making his way but to the pavilion for 2. The very next over Burt had Washington caught low down at second slip by Matt Wardle with the older members of the Ashley XI saying ‘I couldn’t have got down that low.’ Alsager were struggling at 18 for 3 and Ashley’s tails were up. With Wardle’s 6 overs up Smith came on to replace him and bowled probably the best he has for the 3rds this season and deserved more than the one wicket he got as he comprehensively bowled Hindle for 17 with a Yorker. Cusack in the meantime has replaced Burt and was showing signs of stiffness after a week on tour in Kent. He did however detect Marrows interest in the tossed up ball and as Marrows eyes lit up Cusack’s full toss landed at his feet and hit the stumps and he trudged back without troubling the scorer. Tierney came on to replace Smith after his 5 alloted overs and got McGilvery over exicted who even at the age of 12 tried to hit him back over his head Smith was alert and took a good running catch from Mid – Off. Alsager’s skipper realised that some quick runs were required but Tierney and now Burgess were keeping the pressure on. He eventually hit Tierney to mid – on only to find Burgess there who snaffled a chance which didn’t involve him having to move. Tierney then had Cliffe caught, again by Smith taking a very good catch over his shoulder. Burgess then bowled Padmore and brought Josh Wardle to finish the job as he did at Stretton the week before. However in the second ball of Burgess’s 5 th over he bowled O’Brien and Alsager were all out for 81. Not a catch dropped [For the second week running] and the Ashley boys went inside to enjoy a much deserved tea. The Little and Large partnership of Brownhill and Smith went out to bat and Brownhill showed his intent by cover driving the first ball for 4. They were not hanging around and after 9 overs brought the 50 up. It was good for all to see such positive batting with Brownhill hitting 6 fours and Smith 4. So much so Simon ‘I only bat 3 or 7’ Ferris give up his allotted 3 spot to Eaton and dropped down to 5 [I won’t be needed today] in order to give Cattell who was making his Ashley debut a chance of a knock having done a good job in the field. Smith having just hit Cliffe back over his head for 4 charged down the wicket to repeat the shot but was just beaten in the flight and Pickford stumped him for a very good 30; I am sure this young mans maiden 50 for the 3rds is not far away. Eaton went out to join Brownhill and they quickly finished off the job by hitting 2 more fours each and the job was done after only 16.1 overs going at over 5 an over. A resounding 9 wicket victory for the 3rds which should take them a bit further up the table. Let’s hope they can keep this unbeaten run going which at the moment stands at 7 as they make the away trip to Middlewich next week with stand in skipper Cusack at the helm.
