Ashley vs Nantwich 4ths

Date: Sunday 18th May 2008

Venue: Nantwich

Toss won by: Nantwich

Batted First: Ashley

A mix of youth and experience suffered a 10 wicket defeat at the well appointed home of Nantwich on Sunday. Losing the toss Ashley were offered first use of a rock hard strip on the edge of the square and Hatchell and Gibson started positively both hitting the bad balls into the gaps. They both perished trying to lift the ball over the infield without full conviction, as did Coleman who got a leading edge to second slip. Eaton join the stalwart Jackson and both looked in no trouble until Eaton lofted another drive to mid off. Jackson was given several chances but took full advantage to register his highest score for a few years and added 32 for the last wicket with Birtles, it would have been more but both batsmen turned twos into ones and threes into twos with alarming regularity. The final total was probably 50 runs light.

The Nantwich openers then set about the bowling, dispatching anything wide or full and they too took advantage of two chances each to win the game with 12 overs left. Kev Tierney bowled the best spell and was unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets; Rob Oldbury got some good turn and bounce with his leg spin.
