Match Report

The new season started with a game played in temperatures more appropriate for the Iceman than the Rice-man, hence Ricey opted to stay in the warmth and nurse his latest injury. Those who braved the cold put in an excellent performance to bring home a victory and 25 lovely points.

With ex-skipper Ruby dragged out of retirement, his value was demonstrated when he lost the toss and then scratched around for a six-over 3. With the pitch proving some assistance to the bowlers, only Zac, Leachy and new-boy Harry Horsfall got the better of the conditions. Leachy’s knock of 38 in 23 overs helped set a target to bowl at, although the total may have been higher had Leachy remembered that Pengo was no Linford Christie. Harry batted with style and patience in his first game for the club, and looks a prospect for the future.

Defending 91 was never going to be easy, but by the third over things looked very different. Nick Holt bowled with pace and in-swing and George hit the spot with his out-swingers to leave the visitors reeling at 0 for 3. The juniors in the Runcorn middle order consolidated to score some runs and settle the panic, until Nick and Pengo broke through. Pengo’s wickets coming from a fantastic low catch by Zac and a youthful caught-and-bowled. Nick’s aggressive bowling wrapped up the innings, leaving him with man-of-the-match figures of 6 for 31 in 16 overs. Pity there’s no champagne on offer this year …
