Match Report Another new ground was ticked off the list for the 1X1 as they visited the traditional old home of Stockport CC, once of the Central Lancs, and Derbyshire and Cheshire League. Forced to start in Div 3 of the MBCCL it surely won’t be long before they are in the top division if they perform anything like this on a consistent basis. With both sides fielding much changed sides, Ashley batted first on a sporting pitch, and skipper Craig Knight batted superbly for his 57, eventually pinned by the impressive Porritt. Paul Leach struggled to get the ball away before Porritt clipped his off stump to bring Dave Deans to the wicket at 16-1 who took the score to 51 before playing an ugly heave in an attempt to raise the scoring rate in the face of accurate bowling from the young Stockport attack. Stuart Brown then overcame a rapidly disintegrating bat to score a very impressive 49 including several big sixes but was also packed with intelligent strokes all around the ground making use of the large outfield. Some explosive hitting at the end from Brown allowed Ashley finished on a par score of 129-3 that would take some defending. The Stockport batting is receiving some
admiring glances this yea as they sit atop Div 3 and having beaten 2 Cheshire
County League sides in the KO Cup this year so it would take a good
performance from Ashley bowlers to contain them. Both openers Barber and Danaher started well with several
boundaries and well taken singles but were reigned in when the impressive Kevin
Coates yorked Barber for 17 with the score on 31 after 6 overs. Deans picked
up a wicket first ball when Danaher lifted one straight to Ed Hall who made
good ground to take a fine catch, the batter picked the wrong fielder having
been fooled by a couple of instances of poor Hall fielding earlier. It was
then time for the big man to return after missing all season due to injury,
and what an impact returning figures of 4-4-21 including a trademark stumping
for Leach who had his work cut out on the difficult pitch. Ed also produced a
couple of slower balls to dismiss Green for 21 and Sellers for 0 as Ashley
finally started to make headway into the Stockport line up. With the score on
100-8 and only 22 needed from 5 overs it was slightly in Ashley’s favour but
with all of the home side showing good technique and like racing snakes
between the wickets it was a close call. As it was Harry Horsfall and Dave Woods
just about held their nerve conceding only 2 boundaries though Porter worked
the spaces very well seemingly picking up two at will. In the end three runs
outs took the wind from their sails, Horsfall executing a fine effort off his
own bowling, and then the bullet of arm of Duncan Richards sorted out Roberts
and Wiliamson who was trying to complete the winning run off the last ball.
As it was he was just short and Ashley won on wickets to end a close game. Stockport look a very good young outfit and
Ashley look forward to playing them in a couple of years time hopefully in
Div 1 when they will surely prove to be a handful if their young players
continue to develop. Ashley’s reward is a visit to the winner of the Sale
derby between Ashton on Mersey and the Brooklands Professionals. |
