Ashley continued their pursuit of 300+ points to hopefully maintain their 1st division status with a nine wicket win at home to Mere on Saturday. Richard Smith lead the way with a fine 89 not out with 15 fours, and he added 101 for the 2nd wicket with Liam O’Doherty whose unbeaten 54 included 6 fours, a six and a seven.

Winning the toss Mere opened with a 45 run stand before Barber was successful with a shout for leg before wicket. D Ekstein fell to a juggled catch behind the stumps and Roper was another leg before victim. Cunningham and M Ekstein added 40 in 7 overs before Hasan coolly held a catch at the long off boundary to dismiss the former. M Ekstein fell to a brilliant one handed catch at first slip by Sons, before Aussie Leplau and R Plews were dismissed in the 41st and 42nd over. J Plews took advantage of a life when a chance off him was palmed over for 6 to add another 20 runs with Owen.

Both sides appeared to be happy with a final score of 178 for 8.

Smith and Knight opened and after a careful start began to hit the bad ball, with Smith driving all along the ground to the extra cover boundary several times. Knight’s 70 minute stay was over when a leading edge was caught by the bowler. After several promising starts this season it was fitting that Smith won the match in the 42nd over with another boundary.

Ashley picked up 25 points and remain 2nd in the table 31 points behind the professional Brooklands; Davenham CC visit Ashley next week in what is sure to be a keenly contested match.
