Ashley 3rds vs Winnington Park 3rds

Date:  25th May 2008

Venue:Ashley

Toss won by:Winnington Park

Batted First: Winnington Park

Arriving down at HQ the conditions could not be more different from the previous week with strong winds and heavy cloud.  First task find something to hold down the sight screens.  Even though the weather was more suitable to penquins on what looked like a very good batting track the decision to bat first for the Ashley Skipper was a no brainer.  Capper the Wininngton Park skipper called heads and it was, so they decided to bat first another toss was lost.

Another new ball bowling attack was under trial as Agrawal and Burt aimed to be the first attack this season not to give up 50 runs or more before taking a wicket.  Some good control from Agrawal and pace from Burt was putting the pressure on the opening pair along with top notch fielding and chatter [A complete turnaround from the episode of Baywatch does Silent Films last week] which resulted in a few yes no yes maybe calls from Jackson and Capper.  Eventually there was one too many and an accurate throw from Agrawal to the stumps left Thorpe with the easy task of dismissing Capper for 9.  Looking a little on the tired side after running into the force 9 Burt persisted with his leg side line to Jackson who profited very well however he managed to pull out a Yorker from nowhere which thumped into Chaloners middle stump and had him walking back for 5; 2 wickets before 50 things were going to plan.  This brought in the figure of J Woolley who reminded the Skipper somewhat of himself in his youth and told the team ‘This guy is like me not built to block’ and he could not have been more right as Woolley and Jackson played some powerful but controlled shots to the boundary and the plan was looking to be going wrong at 90 for 2.  Cusack was now in the attack and after a lose start [A nice leg side full toss to start with to a 9 – 1 off side field] bowled a wide full pitched delivery to Woolley who chased it and somehow inside edged it onto his off stump just about dislodging the off stump bail ‘Sorry batsman’ uttered the even more red faced than normal Cusack it truly was a dreadful ball.  Burgess was advised again to bring himself on by Shelston after last weeks bowling display the Skipper was hesitant but thankfully struck in his second over trapping Jackson LBW for a quick hitting 55 and 98-4 was looking a bit better.

Cusack with a change of ends dismissed Heywood and T Woolley in one over and Winnington Park were struggling on 110-6.  Richardson obviously knew there was not much batting left as he threw the bat.  However the running between the wickets was again proving a problem for them and what was worse they had not heard of Shelstons run out from last week as again he swooped the leg side boundary and threw in hard with Thorpe at hand again running out Powell for 1 after going back for a second.  Richardson was then bowled by Burgess for 26 and at 134-8 the Skipper brought back Agrawal for a second spell and was not disappointed with Piessing edging one behind and Thorpe taking an excellent low down one handed catch. Agrawal then took a catch off Burgess to close the innings on 142 all out and with 51 overs to get them what could go wrong ?

Ferris was the new opening partner for Smith and was hoping to make some decent runs however after trying to put one round the corner he managed to; straight into the hands of J Woolley 2 for 1 with steam coming out of his ears Cusacks ‘Helpful’ comments were ignored.  Another senior pro went out to join Smith in the shape of Shelston who soon came back in after falling foul to the most bizarre catch of the season which ended up nestled in Jacksons shins. 9 for 2 oh dear surely not another Ashley batting collapse ?!  Thorpe went out in positive mood and crashed Johnson to boundary 3 times in 4 balls.

Within 9 overs Ashley had gone from 9 for 2 to 58 for 2 and the situation looked good.  Smith was then somehow bowled round his legs for 15 and Thorpe followed after skying one for a quickfire 31.  With two new batsmen at the crease Winnington Park sensed a victory could be on the cards at 65 for 4 off 15 overs.

Thankfully they were wrong with Burt and Wardle putting on a unbroken stand of 78 off only 11 overs Burt hitting 6 fours 1 massive six and Matt Wardle building on his innings in the morning of 39* for the U-15 hit 22.  The runs were hit in only 26 overs at a rate of 5.5 an over a thumping victory and 25 points.

Eveything the Skipper has hoped for came together in the end [See the A-Team] with good bowling, fielding and batting lets hope it can be repeated this Sunday as they prepare for the visit of Hale Barns and some legendary pants…

Thanks to Deakin Estate Wines for the sponsoring of the match ball that dismissed a full team for the first time this season.

Very much a result to build on.
