Match Report Ashley welcomed Malpas to comparatively tropical Railway Field, the pitch looking fairly lush but firm, and having lost the toss Ashley were invited to make first use of it. With Gary Tyms eschewing the modern irritations such as the phone to check that he was in the team, and instead arranging a day out with the wife when picked for 1st X1 duty, Ashley went into battle only ten strong until Phil Thompson climbed off his sick bed to ride to the rescue. Richard Smith and Craig Knight opened up for Ashley and started to show real authority, though Smith survived being bowled on a no-ball from the Malpas overseas seamer Flynn. He couldn’t make the visitors pay though as he followed an away swinger from Flynn and was well taken at the wicket by Dunning for 10 and the home side were 22-1. Liam O’Doherty played down the wrong line / received a good ball from Flynn to see him off and Ashley were soon struggling at 25-2. Skipper Ian Barber and Knight then doubled the score before the captain was struck right in front of all three. Dave Deans continued his good form from last week until over-confidence was his downfall trying to cut a short one over cover which unfortunately stopped on him and he fell for 9 with the score on 82-4. Craig Knight followed almost immediately after driving and was caught at the wicket for an excellent 39 which promised much more. Another debutant Seamus Sons, and Nomaan Hasan then put together what turned out to be a match turning stand of 45 as both players drove, pulled and worked the ball around in fine style to help Ashley towards a score. Sons was finally caught at mid-off off the returning Flynn at 127-6, and Matt Wilson and Phil Thompson added twenty odd with Nomaan before falling. Alves and Woods failed to trouble the scorers and the innings closed on a respectable 144 that was probably worth an awful lot more on an early season seamer. Nomaan remained unbeaten on a fine 41 whilst Malpas overseas J. Flynn returned excellent figures on debut of 6-47 from 14 overs. The Malpas reply began steadily with Nomaan Hasan and Dave Woods taking the new ball and once again it was Woods who got the breakthough inducing an edge from Suckley and Deans took a fine looping catch at 2nd slip. Overseas Flynn adopted a rarely seen Peter Willey style technique but was caught plumb in front of all three to give Woods his second victim and see the visitors in the mire at 25-2. The skipper then dropped Stubbs off Woods at mid off when it seemed to have lodged in his ample girth. A frustrating bit of play then followed when Woods appealed for a LBW against Stubbs who also edged the ball to 2nd slip. Both appeals were rejected though the batter felt it worthwhile to boast that he did in fact hit it! Nomaan then refused a tough caught and bowled chance from the same batter who then went on to hit a quick 32 before he crashed it straight to Woods at wide long-off off the canny Deans. At 55-3 the legspin of Dave Alves was introduced and in tandem with Deans ripped the game away from Malpas. Alves firstly deceived the dangerous Walker for a caught and bowled opportunity, and then teamed up with Matt Wilson to execute a fine stumping to dismiss Coates. Dixie accepted a caught and bowled chance from Dunning, with his quicker arm ball also accounting for Wilson-Theaker, and Rowlinson then lifted Alves to cow corner where Smith took a good catch. With the experienced Dave Hunt threatening to break free and edge the visitors home, he smashed a well flighted delivery from Deans to the wide long-off boundary where Woods took a neverbeforeseen full length diving catch. With the dangerman gone, it was only a matter of time although Ashley did manage to grass another tough chance before Alves cleaned up Peak to claim his 4 fer and close the reply on 114. This was a fine win for Ashley with all
team members making a good contribution, though there were two fine batting
and bowling performances which were vital to the win. Craig Knight (39) and
Nomaan Hassan (41*) in the first innings, and ofcourse the outstanding slow
bowling returns of Dave Alves 4-37, and Dave Deans 4-32. Backed up by some
fine catching and good fielding, this was an important win and saw Ashley off
the mark and up the table. With Aussie Kade Norquay hopefully available for
selection for next weeks trip to Alvanley, things look much better moving
into May. |
