Match Report On a glorious summers day Ashley made the trek to the grounds of Cholmondley Castle and once again struggled to come to terms with the difficult wicket as they succumbed to a 7 wicket defeat. Having won the toss skipper Ian Barber decided to bat on what looked a decent surface but was soon showing its teeth as early as the 6th over with the score on 32 when Knight got a grubber that gave him no chance. Baythorpe made a start once again but was bowled by Middleton for 32 and the score on 57. O’Doherty failed to get forward and was bowled by the lively Ford and Smith fell to an outstanding catch at 2nd slip by Guy Ford. Deans survived a strong appeal for caught behind before falling LBW to a feisty Guy Ford who also secured another leg before decision against Seamus Sons. Ross McKinstry went to good catch at the wicket to reqard a fine display by the Cholmondley gloveman Hockenhull. Skipper Barber and Alistair Horn struggled to get the ball away in the final overs and Ashley limped to 125-7. Ashley began well with the ball, Dave Woods picking up a wicket with his first ball when Hockenhull was unlucky to receive a brute of a ball first up that bounced and seamed and took the shoulder of the bat, Dave Deans taking a sharp chance at slip. Barber followed this up with a wicket in the next over, Ashley’s 4th reserve keeper Dave Baythorpe taking a fine edge stood up to the stumps to send Gardner back to the shed and reduce the home side to 4-2. After a couple of nice cover drives Woods reached to the back of his locker and produced a fine Yorker for Ford and Ashley were all over Cholmondley and thinking of an early finish at 22-3. However, Ed Middleton came to the crease and there he stayed playing the perfect innings on a difficult track to finish the game unbeaten on 74. Block the straight ‘un’s and smash the wide ‘un’s. He played superbly, showed great patience and then took advantage hitting through the ball and crashing it through the V, especially thru the covers. He gained good support from Evans who despite looking like he had no shorts at all accrued 35 runs at the close and played an important role in a victory, that was wrapped up inside 32 overs, which on a difficult pitch was no mean achievement. In summary, Ashley must learn how to play at Cholmondley, oh and never bat first at Cholmondley. On the upside we found a cracking pub on the way back: The Pheasant Inn at Higher Burwardsley which saved the day. |
