Ashley 3rd XI vs New Brighton

Date:  27th July 2008

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by:New Brighton

Batted First:New Brighton

On a blisteringly hot day HQ welcomed New Brighton. Ashley hoped that they could build on a good win at Winnington Park.  New Brighton won the toss and decided to bat on a rock hard pitch.  There was a new opening bowling attack of Agrawal and Eaton with an average age of 14 as far as I am aware a first for the Ashley 3rds.  Eaton bowling for the first time for the 3rds bowled with pace and accuracy and soon had Hughes edging one to the slips where Horn took an outstanding catch at first slip.  As Eaton could only bowl the 4 over’s the young left armer  Furness came onto bowl at the Church end and with his first ball removed Bennett as he edged behind where the keeper Ferris snaffled a one handed chance.  Furness then had Green removed as Smith took an excellent catch at second slip which broke the partnership of Green and McKeown.  The skip Burgess brought himself on and with his first over bowled Elsan and Ashley were in control Hale was next to go in the same way as Elsan.  Eaton came on for his second spell and quickly removed the dangerous looking McKeown as Ferris took another good catch behind the stumps.  Burgess took another wicket bowling Blowes with a looping delivery which clearly upset the batsman as he walked off nowhere near the pavilion.  Burgess was on a hat trick but Harrison dead batted the 3rd ball it was not to be.  Eaton beat Drepaul for pace as he took his off stump and they had 3 a piece. Burgess had Harrison caught at short cover by Eaton and then trapped Gregory LBW to take his 3rd 5 wicket haul in as many weeks.  This was one of the best if not the best bowling and fielding displays of the season with all four bowlers performing and being backed up by excellent fielding and superb catching behind the stumps by Ferris, Horn and Smith.

After taking on plenty of fluid and not so much tea Burgess M and Gibson went out to bat; Ashley had 55 over’s to get the 123 required for victory.  Burgess hit a beautiful 4 but then became the first of three batsman in the innings to hit a four and then get out next ball as he edged one behind.  Ashley were 7 for 1 which then became 12 for 2 as Smith edged one to McKeown after hitting a four down towards the pavilion.  Green although he had taken no wickets had bowled with accuracy as his figures showed 7-4-8-0.  In the meantime Gibson and Shelston had got the score up to a more respectable 34 for 2 and Ashley looked to be in line for another victory.  Gibson then edged Harrison to the slip cordon where Hale took a good catch and Ashley were three down.  Shelston then followed and at 43 for 4 things were looking a bit rocky however there was still enough batting in the team.  Then came the dismissal of the day as Horn facing Bennett missed the ball which went through to the keeper, Horn then decided to have a little walk down the wicket and McKeown had him stumped by a good yard, Coleman on 3rd team debut then followed and 43 for 4 became 46 for 6.  Sadly none of the remaining batsmen got into double figures and Ashley slumped to an awful 77 all out.

After such a good bowling and fielding display their batting had let Ashley down again and had given New Brighton the 25 points which looked to have been Ashley’s at the tea interval.
