Match Report The walls have well and truly been breached at fortress Ashley as the
1X1 went down for the second successive game at home by a strong Oakmere outfit who were simply too powerful for a
severely depleted Ashley. Skipper Ian Barber won the toss and elected to bat
on a two paced wicket and despite a strong showing from ex-Roe Green man
Stuart Eaton, Ashley openers Craig Knight and Ian Barber started well until
that is the opening attack found their lines. Eaton got a lifter to take the
shoulder of Knight’s bat for 20, and Barber tried to force a drive that
wasn’t quite there and was well taken at point by Ackersley.
At 27-2 Ashley were in a spot of trouble and it
didn’t get any better when Sons was worked over by Eaton who was finding
extra bounce. Paul Leach battled hard for his 30 showing great patience
whilst watching his partners coming and going at the other end. Horsfall also
fell to Eaton, whilst Jon Griffiths was perhaps unlucky to have been deemed
to have edged Ball to keeper Owen, but the rot had already taken hold. Ross Mckinstry was another Eaton victim and with only Dave
Woods offering any resistance with a hard hitting 28 not out Ashley closed on
118-9 someway short of a competitive total. Hutchinson and Yearsley started strongly for
the visitors pouncing on anything remotely short but it was once again Woods
who was out of luck seeing a good chance grassed before he was punished and
withdrawn from the attack. Rish Agrawal
showed good promise on his 1X1 debut and is one to look out for in senior
cricket in the coming years. It was however Ian Barber who made the
breakthrough to have Yearsley caught at cover by
Harry Horsfall with half the job done at 59-1. The
introduction of David Alves saw Ashley pick up a
few bonus points, a smart return catch accepted off the impressive
all-rounder Stuart Eaton for a well made 26, and This defeat saw Ashley deservedly fall out of the top 3 into 4th
spot after several poor performances though its fair to say that this week
saw the 1X1 and 2X1 experiencing very poor availability and it was testament
to the strength of the club membership that Ashley managed to get full sides
out, in addition to the two sides due out on Sunday. Both batting and bowling
units are in need of a little confidence as we move into the second half of
the season keen to taste the winning habit again. Next up Ashley host Runcorn who are struggling a little and Ashley will be
looking to put right a poor performance on an arctic April afternoon in the
first game of the season. |
