Ashley vs Didsbury

Date: Sunday 29th June

Venue: Ashley

Batted First: Didsbury

Ashley U15’s were well beaten by a strong Didsbury on Sunday. However, there were many good points to take away from the game.

Three more U13’s were drafted into the team due to a number of regulars missing. This meant that six players in total were from the U13 squad.

Tom Graham, Thomas Bragg, James Semple and Alistair Berryman all making their presence felt with excellent fielding performances.

At 96 for 1 Didsbury looked poised to post a massive score. However, the introduction of Robert Oldbury’s leg spin changed things around. Robert took 3 quick wickets and a corker of a catch to remove the Didsbury middle order.  Another excellent spell from Ben Mckie also helped put the brakes on.

Matt Furness returned to dismiss the dangerous Howell with a fizzer of a delivery, which Martin Blain took at head high behind the stumps. Tommy ‘gun’ Smith also returning to take a cleaned bowled. Ashley staged a good fightback, to take 5 wickets in the last five overs.

At the half way stage the Ashley umpire was asked by the Didsbury umpire for a quick turn around as they were anxious to get away !

This anxiety showed in the first LBW appeal of the Ashley innings, with Matt Furness immediately being triggered. This was followed up by a strange interpretation of the run out rules ( I always thought you were out if your bat didn’t cross the line )  Rob Oldbury being the unlucky batsman.

To be fair Didsbury bowled really well and sent a number of our batsmen back in quick succession.

With no chance left of winning the game the remaining batters were instructed to bat straight and not give their wickets away. Matt Wardle carried out the instruction to the full, batting the full twenty overs. He was ably assisted by Ben McKie, Alistair Berryman and George Paton, in a rear guard action

I couldn’t fault the performance at all, well done lads
