Ashley scored enough points in this drawn game to secure their place in the league for next and bid good buy to champions Brooklands. Winning the toss Knight asked the home side to bat first and Woods had Hart smartly caught at mid on for a bargain 1. This brought (bought??) Sharma to the crease and he and Birchall made Ashley pay for some sloppy bowling with a 60 run partnership before Birchall feathered a catch to the keeper. Sharma cashed in as Ashley dropped him on 30 and 60, and he knocked up an unbeaten ton, adding a further 63 with diminutive home skipper Madden. AJ Hart then perished trying to score quickly, but not before hitting the runs to give them the championship; Garnett came and went, Singh then helped Sharma to his hundred before the home side declared after 43 overs.
Pinch hitter Tyms (25 off 17 balls) got off the mark first ball with a huge six and Singh was smartly removed from the attack to be replaced by the slow stuff of Roberts; with the field well spread Tyms was bowled, unable to work the ball into the many gaps. Sons and McKinstry both batted sensibly to take the score to 84 for 3 off 26 overs, but the introduction of another slowie paid off as Woodage took 4 for 10 off 4 overs. 112 for 8 soon became 112 for 9 as Woods chipped one up of Madden, who was heard to say “I’m buying wickets now”; Woods commented “that’s not all you’ve been buying this year.” Wilson and Power then batted for 7 overs and added 40 untroubled runs to give Ashley 8 points and another crack at life in the Meller Braggins top division.
The champagne was brought out after the match for the champs and their supporters, Ashley headed to The Brook for a few pints of Hydes.
