Ball Sponsor – Peter Roberts, Former Ashley Player (TOG) After the usual First Team
cry off on the morning of the game, strategies were hurriedly re-thought for
the visit of high flying Brooklands. On a warm day a 10 / 10 Twinney belter begged for a
toss win by Stand in Skip Ricey, but alas his day of woe started as Brooklands Skipper Platt elected for first use on the
Ashley Motorway. Rish and Nick opened up well, with Nick having the
aggressive Bowden dropped on 0 then Rish suffering
when the Skipper put him down when on 20. With the batsmen going for their
shots this was obviously going to be a day of damage limitation. Ashley
thought they had the breakthrough when Martin ‘The Mascot’ Blain appeared to
all to have caught the normally Old School Clowes
at the wicket, he didn’t walk and wasn’t given so the Blue Caps started again
with the spin twins Jimmy D and Jacko taking the
pace off and bowling with discipline to one side of the wicket thus reducing
the batsmen’s scoring options. With the score on around
140 Jimmy D broke through with a front foot LBW, Clowes
didn’t like the decision – hey we know how you feel !!, this brought the hard
hitting Holloway to the wicket who proceeded to run out the century bound
Bowden. Wickets started to fall at a trickle but points were being accrued as
the total ran towards the expected 210 and declaration, this was not to be as
Holloway blazed away and presented the Skipper with a skier at Mid On which
was again dropped forcing him to leave the field with a broken finger and
calls of split ends ringing in his ears. Brooklands
batted on perhaps mindful of the following days 20 / 20 final, the innings
ended on a mammoth 247. Dave Royle
and Wardy opened up confidently, with ‘Lerkio’ especially severe of anything driveable
or short, whilst John batted with great technique and style accumulating all
around the wicket. With the score on 57 Dave drove one back at former Ashley
favourite Nadeem Alam who
took the catch low down. Dodger 2 - Mike Burgess came in at three keen to show
his promotion from the 3rd XI was justified, which he did especially
after John’s departure for an excellent 24. Mike stood back, supported and
enjoyed an excellent partnership of 75 with Jimmy Felix who took on the
bowling with shots all around the park included two crowd pleasing maximums.
These two departed within twenty runs of each other leaving Holt & ‘Bolt’
to see Ashley to the 170 mark and maximum batting
points. With Brooklands
due to face relegation rivals |
