Venue: Butchers Stile, Davenham

Toss won by: Ashley

Batted First: Ashley

A TALE OF TWO FAT SEAMERS

Ashley traveled down the A556 to a much quieter then usual Davenham and on a below average wicket secured a tense 26 run win as they bowled the home side out for 82.

Batting first openers Knight and Bradshaw were soon separated as Dean Jackson carried on from where he left off last year when he was the divisions leading wicket taker as Knight was beaten by one that pitched off and hit leg; Dave Royle, making his 1st XI debut, hit the ball cleanly until he tried to nudge one to the leg side and was leg before to one that hit his ankle. The skipper then strode to the crease and played a cautious innings that added 39 runs in just over an hour before he received his 3rd leg before decision of the season, as he was adjudged plump in front; 50 for 3 was soon 50 for 5 as the home bowlers bowled straight using the spiteful wicket to their advantage, Bradshaw fell for 17 after 86 minutes at the crease, an innings he later described as the best 17 he’d ever scored. Wigfield and McKinstry then came together in what proved to be the games most important partnership. After a cautious start in which they only scored 5 runs between them in their first 40 deliveries they hit hard and straight to add 34 in 50 minutes. The 6 foot 4 inch Wigfield fell leg before to one that hit his ankle, earlier in his innings he was hit on the shoulder and neck by balls that rose off a length. Alam was caught sweeping, Logan then perished trying to pinch a second run to Cookson who had earlier dropped a dolly and the innings closed in the last over on 108, a par score, which crucially included 19 extras.

After a hearty tea the Davenham reply began and Gandy soon removed McNichol plumb in front; this brought Loveridge in to join ex-Elworth 2nd teamer Wright and they added 58 in 70 minutes, Wright played the days only high scoring innings which included 4 sixes and 2 fours and was only the second innings of the day made up of more than 10 scoring shots, earlier Wigfield had 11 scoring shots.

Wright was winning the game on his own when Barber trapped him leg before with the score on 60; Davenham then collapsed to 82 all out in 16 overs, as the Ashley skipper picked up 6 for 7 in 8.3 overs. Cookson was dropped by McKinstry in the covers but was smartly stumped in the next over, Sharples walked when he nicked one behind and P Jackson looked to be capable of winning the game as hit 10 in quick time but he fell for the Barber slow ball and was held by Logan in the covers. Day was cleaned up first ball, Chambers was bowled having a swipe; by this time Gandy had returned for his second spell and picked up 2 for 8 in 8.3 overs, bowling Cartlidge and Simmons in the 28th over.

Barber was the inaugural winner of the Puka jacket for his all round performance and the team traveled home via the Duke of Portland in Lach Dennis and the Golden Pheasant at Plumley before joining the 2nd XI at the Orange Tree.

Ashley move up to 5th in the league and will host Hale Barns next Saturday
