After having almost 1 month of no fixtures due to a free weekend and 2 abandonments Ashley 3rds were raring to go at a slightly moist Winnington Park; well most of them were Ferris and Burt were nursing hangovers of various degrees. The toss was a difficult decision and Winnington Parks Captain Jackson decided to put in Ashley who were in need of a 25 pointer to keep in touch with the rest of the pack. Ferris and debutant Usmani went out in positive attitude however due to an uncharacteristic shot from Ferris the mood had changed 4 for 1 on a damp pitch. Griffiths went out to join Usmani and both found runs hard to come by on a slow wicket. Griffiths tried to give his wicket away by top edging of George who managed to Bungle a very easy C & B. The slow pitch was the undoing of Usmani as one stuck in the pitch from Bliss and he chipped it up back to the bowler who made no mistake. Thankfully Bliss had bowled his allotted 7 overs for only 11 runs and 2 wickets. 24-2 This brought Burt to the crease who was in defiant mood despite a monster hangover his arrival and hitting of 3 fours off his first 10 balls put Griffiths in the mood who smashed Stott onto the top of the Pavilion which saw the first tile of the day shatter. Woolley at the other end was getting the ball to turn however Burt was taking no prisoners and hit 3 6’s [2 tiles, 1 car] and 4 4’s off him until managed to get one through Griffiths’s gate and took his bails. They had managed however to put on 60 in 12 overs and it looked a bit more positive at drinks break. Mike Burgess joined Burt and they put on a further 26 until Mike chipped one to mid wicket. The Ashley skipper [Leg supports included] strode out to join Bludger Burt who was enjoying putting the bowlers to all parts of the ground. Having survived a C & B appeal of a bump ball Burgess was surrounded by a few unhappy Winnington Park faces thankfully a couple of them had seen the ball bounce and the game continued in good spirit. Burt clubbed Tracey for 20 in one over and the max batting points were in Ashley’s grasp only 11 needed off 3 overs [149 for 4]. Burt wanted to go all guns blazing however the more circumspect skipper Burgess seeing that there was still another 10 overs left disagreed as Bliss on his second spell was still bowling well. Burgess then proceeded to hit 17 in the next over bringing the tile count up to 5. Burgess was run out in the next over due to none existent calling from either player which was a shame as the 2 had scored 71 off the last 7 over’s. Burt was approaching his maiden 100. Just in case he didn’t know his Uncle Nick shouted ‘You’re on 95!’ no doubt trying to put the Burt off as the promise of a boozy night out on Nick if he got a centaury this season loomed ever closer. The first time a non player has been fined I think. After a couple of nervy over’s Burt hit George through the covers for 4, 103*. George ‘Bongo’ Harrison was not to be outdone and hit a six off his first ball and eventually the innings was brought to a close on 229-7. A total which mathematician extraordinaire Ferris was only 5 off with his half time workings out. Burt finished 106* a fine knock to all parts. Agrawal and Bongo opened the bowling and pinned down Stott and Bliss as they swung both ways. Bongo had Stott trapped LBW to one that kept low in his 2nd over and Ashley had the start they wanted. Elson was then run out by a combination of a Griffiths dropped catch which he then sent pinging into Agrawal who left Elson stranded mid pitch. Mike ‘Colly’ Burgess was first change and struck quickly removing the very capable Jackson for a duck. Bliss was having none of it and with George at the other end put the ball to all parts until Colly Burgess had Bliss and Burt’s Buckets took a good catch. Johns joined George and took advantage as the Ashley skipper was having an off day with the ball. Colly Burgess however was having a dream and picked up Johns and Room and was approaching a Michelle. Skipper Burgess eventually had Tench caught fishing outside off stump for a duck. Sadly Colly Burgess ran out of steam [4-35] and skip had had enough of bowling dross. Zain Sadozai another debutant was joined by the returning Wardle who had earlier landed heavily on his slowly recovering fractured elbow. Zain bowled well and his pace increased with his confidence and had George out nicking one behind to the keeper Blain. Wardle still obviously struggling with his elbow was replaced by Bongo Harrison who blew the tail away in 10 balls and Ashley had a much deserved win by 84 runs. A special mention to John Burt on his maiden 100 [11 x 4 4 x 6], hard luck Uncle Nick its going to be an expensive night ! Mike Burgess 4-35 and Harrisons 3-30 who both had the Winnington Park batsmen all ends up. It is going to be an interesting last 5 fixtures with Oulton Park, Tattenhall, Stretton, New Brighton as well as Ashley all with a chance of winning the title. Ashley having to play Tattenhall away and New B twice in the last 5. Next weekend Widnes at home and a chance to revenge the only loss of the season so far.
