Ashley vs Trafford MV

Date:  Saturday 4th July 2009

Venue: MacPherson Park, Finneybank Lane, Sale

Toss won by: TMV

Batted First: TMV

The next 6 games see Ashley either playing at home or locally and this week they traveled 5 miles down the A56 to Trafford MV, who had rolled them for 70 odd last year. With the Captain resting at one of West Yorkshire’s top Hotel and Spa resorts it was left to his Sergeant, Wilson, to lead the team. He was disappointed to lose the toss, but his mood lightened when the home team elected to bat on a poor looking wicket.

Hanrahan opened up with Shakespeare, who after a headline debut last week was given a leading role with the ball. Bill’s first six overs contained only one scoring shot and a no-ball, which Kershaw hit straight to Horsfall, who had the good sense to throw the ball to the keeper rather than hurling it in the air to celebrate. Meanwhile Brucie was having trouble with his front foot, no-balling 5 times in his first over and a half.

Warner, the home sides danger man, had gone in the 5th over well caught by Basher, a bowling change brought Buster into the attack and he reeled off 5 maidens in his first 6 overs. (34 for 3 after 22 overs)

Law, previously a team-mate of Alam’s at the Pro’s, took a liking to his bowling but after hitting 2 fours and 2 sixes he was trapped in front. Hanrahan returned to the attack from the River end and after Abbas hit him for 4, Power dropped a relatively easy chance coming in from square leg; Abbas was bowled next ball, this brought a quick end to the innings as Hanrahan took 5 for 0 off 22 balls, bowling full and straight to great effect.

Ashley had 58 overs to score the runs and register a first win for 6 weeks.

With the threat of rain in the air Bradshaw and Knight got on with it; both fell in the 8th over, Knight bowled driving over a full delivery and Bradshaw ballooning a catch to mid on after the ball popped. Felix was given out leg before off Asad, who had destroyed the Ashley batting last year with his twisters, this time he was bowling seam up of a full run; at 36 for 3 the boys were twitching. But Shakespeare and Power batted as a couplet to almost double the score, then Horsfall hit the winning run with 40 overs left.

Hanrahan was awarded the PUKA for his magnificent bowling spell, narrowly ahead of Shakespeare.

At the halfway point in the season Ashley sits 6th in the table on 157 points, last season a total of just over 300 would see a side finish 4th, but in 2008 Brooklands scored a larger than usual number of points and hopefully there will be less abandoned games this year, leading to clubs picking up more points.

Ashley is behind Alvanley (161) and Malpas (171). Northwich, Ashton and Congleton (196) are the title chasers separated by 5 points. Mere (156) and Hale Barns (142) will be looking to overtake, Ashley whom they face in the coming weeks and the bottom four Barrow (123) Trafford (110) Davenham (105) and Winnington Park (93) will all be looking to avoid the drop into the second division.

Leading run scorers for the team are Bradshaw with 233 at an average of 23.3 and Barber 219 at 31.29. Barber is the leading wicket taker with 22 at 7.18 followed by Hanrahan with 18 at 7.33. Alam and Gandy both have 15.

Next week we travel to title chasers Ashton on Mersey, please note the early start (1pm), they bowled magnificently in the first game of the season at Ashley when defending 105 and we have a rather poor record at Little Ees Lane, we are quite possibly winless there in the modern era.
