He’s a Victorian, we love him

Ashley ground out a 25-point win at home to local rivals Hale Barns on Saturday thanks to two contrasting, but equally important knocks. Skipper Ian Barber spent all but 10 minutes of the match on the field of play, batting for two hours and twenty minutes, and coming in at 46 for 5 Steve Logan hit a brisk 36 off 37 balls to see Ashley home with 8 overs left.

Winning the toss Hale Barns captain Andy Wood, former team mate of Barber and Craig Knight at Oulton CC, elected to take first knock and both openers each hit fours to get of the mark. Filson though perished next ball went he drove straight to ex-Hale Barns spinner Dave Alves. 15 year old Warner came to the crease and showed admirable technique dealing with the speed of Hanrahan and the guile of Alam before he took one right in the family allowance and had to retreat to the dressing room to gather his composure. Wood strode to the crease but was soon sheepishly walking back as he played on. (29 for 2) Robinson was adjudged leg before one run later before Iqbal smashed two 6s in a brisk 19 before he fell for the Alam slower ball (50 for 4) and was well caught by Knight at long off. Opener Cooper had batted for 82 minutes when he gave Wilson a sharp chance stood up (50 for 5) the very tall Collins played a patient innings until beaten for pace (60 for 6). Hale Barns’ MOM Dunelley then stuck around for 45 minutes adding first 27 with the returned and off colour Warner (87 for 7) and a further 12 with the ex-Ashley senior pro Molloy who was last out in the 41st over.

Knight was unable to open the innings for Ashley after twisting he knee chasing a ball to the boundary; on first examination it appeared he had dislocated his knee-cap so Paul Hanrahan stepped in as emergency opener. Both openers were back in the shed with only 4 on the board; the excitable Filson running down the wicket as fast as his little legs could carry him to exhort “see you later” when Bradshaw was caught at slip. The Aussie had a face like thunder when he got back to the pavilion, not because he had been given a send off, but because “he told me to get back to Botany Bay, I’m from Melbourne, I’m a Victorian!”

Barber and Alex Wigfield then batted sensibly for 40 minutes trying to wear down the accurate and nagging seam and swing bowing; Dunnelly, bowling a great left arm over line, didn’t concede a run off his first 7 overs, then only 4 runs off his next 4. Wigfield was leg before in the 17th over with the score on 17 and Gandy appeared to have the measure of the bowling until he tried to hit Molloy over the top and was well held by Iqbal, (33 for 4) McKinstry was the final Ashley wicket to fall at 46 for 5 in the 29th over. This brought Roy Coleman to the crease and he played just the sort of innings he has been promising; with the change bowlers bowling a little shorter and wider he was able to free his arms and hit 7 fours and ran 4 twos with the winning boundary coming up in the 41st over. Barber remained unbeaten on 35 and had faced 112 deliveries, also hitting 7 fours.

This win pushed the Ashley team into 4th place and they travel down the A556 next week to Winnington Park, a team they beat in a thrilling Cheshire Cup game a few years ago, but haven’t played a league game against them in recent memory. Winnington bowled Northwich out for 41 in week 2 of the season but were beaten by a strong Alvanley side today.
