Ashley vs Bollington 3rds

Date: Sunday 10th May 2009

Venue: Ashley

Toss won by: Bollington

Batted First: Ashley

MATCH BALL SPONSOR:   Graham Park CBE      Ashley CC Supporter & Vice President

10 weeks of indoor nets and a few more outdoor sessions proved to be of little use on Sunday as the Ashley top order was blown away in 6 overs with only 14 years old James Semple able to build an innings. He batted for 25 overs as the home side were reduced to 27 for 6 in 8 overs. He added 20 runs with George Harrison before the innings was given an unlikely boost by the 9,10 & 11 batsmen. Firstly Cusack hit 5 fours, mostly to the cover boundary with a square cut that Keith Miller would envy, adding 59 with Semple; Birtles hit his highest score for Ashley (including 7 fours), indeed his highest score for 20 years, whilst adding another 30 with the youngster Semple, who was adjudged leg before trying to sweep a straight one. This brought Dan Ediae to the crease and he showed great skill in keeping both spin and pace bowler out as the last pair added another 30 runs. This gave Ashley 4 batting points and left the Bollington fielders and bowlers a little frustrated.

Ladds was bowled slogging in the second over for Bollington and Murdoch and Wood were both given lives that cost Ashley 60 runs. Wardle found some turn and beat the bat consistently; Harrison proved himself to be an excellent prospect bowling only one bad ball in 5 overs, a full toss that skipper Rowe hit to Cusack at square leg.

The winning runs came up in the 34th over; despite a rather poor showing from the Ashley bowlers, they were unable to consistently bowl one side of the wicket, this was a better performance than most games last season. Next week we travel to Woodford who were relegated from Division 3 at the end of the 2008 season.
