Ashley threw away any chance of a victory when they grassed at least four catches as Congleton racked up an impressive 221 for 4 on Saturday. Browe was dropped on 0 and 15, Blease on 9 and Aussie Bailey was missed on 1. In reply Ashley were boosted by 30 sundries including more than 2 extra overs, but the introduction of Browe into the attack ruined any hopes of a successful chase as he claimed 3 wickets in his first over.

Congleton were invited to have first knock and batted sensibly, reaching 102 in the 30th over, taking full advantage of the lives they received they stepped up the run rate to add 109 in the next 15 overs, including 60 off the last 6. Ashley held on to three catches, Logan’s run and diving effort in the outfield gave Alam some small reward for his marathon spell.

Griffiths played on in the 9th over (25 for 1) before Barber and Bradshaw took the score to 65 but Browe’s first was to prove fatal to the home side. His first ball was a front foot no ball, he won a leg before shout against Bradshaw with the second, Knight cover drove his first ball for 4 before leaving the next, he was also adjudged leg before next ball and Wigfield played back his first two before spooning a catch to the bowler. Browe 3 for 5 off 1.1 overs, Ashley 69 for 4 off 15.

Logan added 34 with his skipper and at the end of the 25th over 108 runs were needed with 5 wickets in hand. Having just cleared the ropes with a mighty 6, Barber spliced one to Booth at mid-wicket (118 for 6). Horsfall put together his first meaningful knock of the year before edging behind to replacement keeper Blease (159 for 7 off 39); earlier Bailey had taken one on the end of his finger and retreated to the fine leg boundary. Wilson and Alam batted with any alarms to take Ashley to maximum batting points.

Other results saw Ashley move down a place to 5th, 7 behind Congleton put still in touch with the top 3 who are separated by only 2 points. Mere closed the gap on Ashley to 5 points as they defeated league leaders Malpas.

The PUKA jacket was awarded to Nad Alam for his 23 over spell from the Church End, for once the XXL size jacket appearing to fit the recipient.
