Ashley vs Winnington Park

Date:  Saturday 16th May

Venue: Winnington Recreation Club, Winnington

Toss won by: Ashley

Batted First: Ashley

Ashley arrived at Winnington Park missing 3 regulars but posted their highest score of the season and took a full 25 points to see them top of the table for the first time this year. Winnington Park started the game at the foot of the table and had recently appointed a new skipper.

Winning the toss skipper Barber had no hesitation in batting on a wicket that appeared to have a bit more juice in it than normal. Knight and Bradshaw were both back in the very large shed with only 15 on the board so Wigfield joined his skipper and they batted with calm authority to add 70 in 22 overs before Wigfield (5 fours) picked out the only leg side boundary fielder just after the second break for rain. Three more wickets fell for only 15 runs, all to Hayes who at one point had taken 4 for 6 in 17 balls, before the experienced and non-remunerated Hanrahan added 16 in 23 minutes until he was stumped. Barber gave one simple chance when he was dropped at extra cover by Hine, who then kicked the ball away in disgust past a rather startled mid on, giving away an easy single, an act that later saw him win the D**k of the Day award from his team-mates. After an innings full of shots Barber reached his 50 (6 fours and 1 six) off 116 balls in 135 minutes before he feathered a catch behind, and walked, to give McKeown his fourth victim.

It was all over for WP inside 5 overs as they were reduced to 4 for 4; Hine was bowled in the 3rd over and Holt bowled Wales as he went back to drive before Hanrahan trapped Atherton in front; McKeown had a dreadful slog at his 3rd ball and was easily pouched by Logan. Hanrahan then limped off with a pulled muscle and Hall, making his first appearance for a season and a half and possibly his last game for Ashley before moving to London village, replaced him. After a few wides he settled into his usual rhythm and Knight snapped up Spibey at slip (23 for 5). The young Chalenor, fresh from two tons in recent weeks batted sensibly with Walsh and they took the score to 71 before Walsh had a slog at Alves and Wigfield took the first of two good catches. Barber bowled Chalenor (84 for 7). Bradshaw boosted his points tally in the fantasy cricket competition when he stumped Begbie (86 for 8) and then Hayes picked out Wigfield to make it 91 for 9. The two opening bowlers Cowell and Shingler batted in some comfort and for 6 overs had the Ashley lads worried they might miss out on 25 points. However, Hall returned to the attack from the Factory end and held onto an easy C&B to dismiss Cowell in the 42nd over.

With Ashton holding on for a draw at home to Malpas Ashley moved 3 points clear at the top of the table, but they have started the previous 2 season at the right end of the table before slipping away in the 2nd half and they will guard against any suggestion of complacency when they make the short trip to Mere next weekend.

PUKA jacket awarded to Alex Wigfield for his 42 and 2 catches.
