Ashley lost their last game of the season and finished a disappointing 10th as they collected only 7 points at home to Trafford; the visitors needed a win to be sure of staying up and they hit 216 for 6, Ashley were all out in the 40th over for 155.
After Ashley’s great win last week away at Northwich secured their 1st division status for another year the home side were determined to put in a good performance and they reduced MV to 33 for 3 before Law took charge and hit an unbeaten century in 136 minutes. He rode his luck but that shouldn’t take away from a knock that put his team in the driving seat as they set attacking fields and took the ten wickets they needed to register a 25 point win.
For Ashley Paul Hanrahan bowled with his usual pace to clean bowl his four wickets; Rick Gandy underlined his all-rounder status with 2 wickets and played his part in Ashley’s opening stand of 81 in 15 overs. Overseas players Ash Bradshaw took his season tally to 743 runs at 41 with another boundary laden innings, he scored 71% of his runs for the season in fours and sixes. His last 8 innings saw him score 498 runs at an average of 71. He received a rather unpleasant and unnecessary send off from the TMV bowler and one or two fielders; perhaps this showed how much they valued his wicket. Overall the Victorian has had a great season with Ashley, his determination to score big runs when we needed them won several games for the side; he leaves with the best wishes from everyone at the club and we all hope to see him back at Ashley again soon.
Meanwhile the club will reflect on a 10th place finish that with another half a dozen points would have seen them in 7th place. The team failed to beat bottom club Barrow and the home game against Ashton and the away game at Mere were ones that should have been won.
The loss of 5 of last years top 6 batsmen meant it would always be a tough season; as usual we managed to recruit three or four quality players but the club needs more batting and more consistency, probably something all teams around us in the league need. Planning for 2010 starts now with all senior players working hard to attract disillusioned players from all over the county and after the stunning season the 2nd team had, finishing 5th behind the so called big four of Ashton, Congleton, Northwich and Hale Barns, the club will look to give talented youngsters a chance to establish themselves in the 1st team.
