The Ashley 3rds met down at HQ eager to build on an exciting victory against Middlewich which saw them sitting 3rd in the league behind the visitors 1st placed Tattenhall. The defeats to Tattenhall last year were still prominent in some of the team members minds. With Shelston sunning himself in France skipper Burgess P came back into the side after missing all games so far due to a knee injury and had to fill the large boots left by John Burt who had done an excellent job skippering over the last couple of months. The toss was won and after a long pause the Ashley skipper decided to bat first on a track that had seen 350+ runs scored the day before. Brownhill [Crouchy] and Murray [Nickname Murray] stepped out in positive mood intent on putting on a good partnership. It was just the start that Ashley wanted as they brought up the 50 partnership in the 9th over with Murray being the more aggressive with some ‘Marvellous efforts’ being hammered to all parts of the ground; it wasn’t until the 17th over until Tattenhall opener Cottier bowled Murray with a grass cutter leaving him 10 short of a much deserved 50. This brought the swishing blade of Ollie Griffiths to the crease and he did not disappoint the crowd including his Mum,Dad,Brother girlfriend Natalie and a rather large Alsation with several stand and deliver shots which saw the ball fly across the quick outfield on 3 occassions. Sadly it was only a cameo this time as the Tattenhall skipper got him C & B with a good slower ball for 16. Brownhill was ‘moving through the gears’ all the while and with vice Skip ‘Big John’ Burt joining him at the crease it seemed to inspire him to open his shoulders and leave behind the ghost of Alan Simmons. Burt hit a couple of singles which seemed to bore him, his next 7 out of 10 scoring shots amassed 32 runs including 2 huge sixes in one over off O’Neill. Brownhill brought up his 50 which included some very good running in between the wickets and trade mark cover drives. Burt brought up his 50 by hitting the hapless O’Neill for 4 and 6 and for good measure another 4 which Sandland tried to stop but only damaged his finger which the next day resembled ‘A fat black sausage’ thankfully it was not a bad injury as first thought and he was back on the field after only missing 5 overs or so. It was a mixture of over ambitious running and a bit of a slow start from Burt that saw him well run out for a marvellous 61 [8 fours 3 sixes]. This brought young Hatch [In his designer Cricket boots / his name is written in biro on them] out to the crease with designs on playing a Dilshan innings. Brownhill opened his shoulders again and nearly hit a 6 with the ball only dropping inches shot and Hatchell was driving the ball with technique you would expect from someone years older [He’s only been playing 2 years]. With Brownhill starting to pull off the odd forward defensive in the final overs he was told by his skipper to be more positive which he was but sadly was bowled by Cottier for a stupendous 74 [9x4]. Skipper Burgess came out and flung the bat and decided he wasn’t to be the only skipper damaging his hand as Spann hit his aging gloves and his thumb came up a beauty; from one injury to another. Hatchell did do a Dilshan last ball of the innings paddling Spann from outside off stump with a grin as wide as a Cheshire Cat but was well run out going for a second run ending the innings on a big score of 238-5. Ashley 3rds had not amassed such a total since…well I will let Mr Ferris tell you about that day against Stretton… George Harrison [Bongo for those Morcombe & Wise aficionados] swung the ball beautifully and had Roberts and Spraggs playing and missing on numerous occasions where as Burt hit the deck had and as usual gave away very little. Burt was replaced by Burgess [Twin Jnr] who Spraggs took to immediately as he kept on dropping them a bit too short. In the next over George had Roberts well caught at first slip by Burt and Spraggs was to follow in Burgess M’s next over as he went for one shot too many top edging to Tommy Smith who was alert at Mid On and took a good catch. The injured Sandland was unable to get out of his crease and made the remark ‘Once you start prodding you can’t stop’ I will not finish the sentence due to comical licence. The off-spin of Wardle came on the replace the swinging Harrison and he struck with his fourth ball as Sandland top edged to Griffiths who snaffled it with aplomb. Under instruction from his skipper the new batsman Spann was told to ‘Go for it’ which he did but not before the combination of the Burgess twins saw Worley removed for 8 a wicket in his first over on return brought a smile to the face of the skipper. Spann and Cottier took the spin of Wardle and Burgess P on and hit some lusty blows before Murray took an excellent catch at slip off Burgess to remove Cottier who had previously scored 10 off the previous 2 balls. Spann continued to go for it until Matt Wardle bowled the left handed Booth a beauty of a delivery which pitched outside leg and hit middle stump, Booth could not believe his eyes [See Gatting v Warne]. Spann’s orders were now to stitch the game. Woods was brilliantly run out by some nifty foot work from Blain who yet again had a top game behind the stumps as he booted Griffith’s throw onto the stumps. Spann it seemed was still going for it and slapped a low full toss back at the grateful Burgess for a good 45. O’Neill was removed in Burgess’s next over trapping him straight in front of middle. Could Ashley pull off a victory in the last 7 overs ? Some good batting by Tattenhalls 10 and 11 Hooper and Woods made the game safe and they clung on for a draw. Another cracking game of cricket between two sides who enjoy the game to the max and no doubt had Fathers Day not beckoned would have had a few beers after the game. It was also good to here from Aki’s new employer Roberts that he was keeping himself out of mischief…looking forward to the return fixture at Tattenhall in August and a few beers at Pub Roberts after the game.
