Ashley dropped a place on Saturday as they couldn’t get past the stubborn resistance of the Barrow boys and had to settle for 14 points. Ashley elected to take first use of a very white strip and the returning Griffiths helped Aussie Bradshaw put on a seasons best 42 in 11 overs; they were helped by the expensive Johnson who after a first over maiden gave away 47 runs in 6 overs including seven fours, three of them off successive balls and four no-balls. He was replaced by Balac, who, initially was less generous and who picked up the wicket of Bradshaw immediately after he registered his maiden half-century for the club (8 fours, 1 six and 97 balls). Between the wickets of the two openers Mal Barrow performed the hat-trick to dismiss Barber, Knight and Wigfield as 86 for 1 quickly became 90 for 5, then 92 for 6 as McKinstry smashed one back to the bowler.
Barrow was keeping Barrow in the game, barely going for two runs an over and reeling off 9 maidens in his first 15 overs. Sons, back from holiday, batted for over an hour to rescue his side, adding 35 with Gandy and 23 with Wilson, before the innings closed on 159 for 8. Once again it was the sides highest score of the year but well short of the sort of score they would have liked.
Gandy opened the attack for Ashley put was soon withdrawn as his hamstring had tightened up, it appeared to be giving him no trouble about 7 hours later as he waltzed around the Revolution dance floor doing his best Mark Ramprakash impression. Barber replaced him and doing his usual impression of a dibbly dobbly, set about the Barrow batsmen, dismissing the first 3 on his way to his third Michelle of the season as Barrow were 49 for 4 off 20 overs. Alam took the fourth as he castled the voluable M Barrow, who had too much to say and too few shots.
Hughes and Balac batted sensibly and took the score to 90 off 33 overs before Barber returned to have Balac caught at the wicket by Wilson and then next over they combined again to stump T Hughes. Gandy caught Johnson at slip off Alves and Ashley sensed they could pocket another 25 points, especially when Durban ran himself out trying to complete a ludicrous 2nd run to Knight (103 for 8 off 38) But skipper Barrow batted out the overs with Hughes, eschewing the chance of a batting bonus point.
Next week we visit table toppers Malpas and will need to find some consistency in the batting to trouble a team who appear to be at the top of their game.
Puka jacket this week went to overseas star Ash Bradshaw, and was very well received around the brushed crome and exposed brick work bars so unfathomably popular in Manchester town centre.
