On a glorious hot day which was made for cricket, Stand in skipper Shelston was made to bat first on a decent looking track with just a hint of something in it for the bowlers. Hatchell raced off from the start and smashed a couple of glorious boundaries and will have been disappointed to have chipped one across the line to point. Brownhill after trademark circumspect start, needed the wise words from old head Murray and the two progressed serenely with the bad ball being suitably punished. Murray eventually fell when T Wooley sneaked one under the bat. Enter Steve Logan, Sunday debut and fresh from FA Cup final heartache. Boy, did he make those boys pay. After an early chance where two fielders collided and nearly died in the process, Mr Logan butchered the Winnington Park with many huge blows whilst Brownhill notched up his half – ton. 104 on 30 became 217 on 45, with M Wardle and Eaton providing suitable support.

Eaton started off with a corker of a second ball that rose sharply and Blain took the looping catch. Harrison improved with each other and got a deserved wicket courtesy of a fine catch by Logan. Matt Wardle then showed the world what he had been threatening for a long time, and bowled a highly impressive prolonged spell of top class off-spin. After removing the dangerous Wooley, wickets fell at regular intervals as Wardle and the evergreen Cusack really shut up shop. Ben Mckie also bowled well again and there was only one team in it. Despite our best efforts, only 9 wickets could be taken. Matt Wardle had only ball at the last man but many positives can be taken from such a comprehensive team performance. Yet again, the fielding was off a very high standard.
